Archaelogical discoveries show that since 6000 BC inhabitants continually called Xios home. The capital city of Xios was built by the Greeks shortly before 1000 BC, and during ancient time Xios knew periods of economic and intellectual wealth.
Xios is regarded as the birth place of the greatest poet of ancient times - Homer. It always has been famous for its formidable navy and its great commercial strength, which profoundly affected scientific and cultural growth around the world. Xios was undoubtedly the most important city of the Greek Colonies in Iona (Asia Minor).
TOWN OF XIOS
The town of Xios lies in the center of the eastern coast of the island facing the Erythrean peninsula and Asia Minor. Today, Xios (Chora, as it is known locally) is the capital of the prefecture. The island covers a wide, almost flat area, with semi-urban districts extending as far as Kambos in the south and Vrontados in the north, which may be regarded as a suburb. To the west the city is limited by hills and to the north by the foothills of Mount Aipos. Towards the east the horizon broadens out and offers a view of the Asia Minor Coast.
